Death of a Salesman Argumentative Essays

Introduction Writers and playwrights try their best in bringing out different themes in their works of literature. Arthur Miller is one of America’s most known playwrights whose literal works have major influence on the lives of most residents of the country. Arthur Miller’s death of a salesman tries to depict how most people are hungry for success. This play gives a highlight on the American dream and how many people will strive to live the dream. Amongst the people trying to live the American dream, some of them will perish while trying to achieve the dream. This is elaborated in the play through the reference of the protagonist of the play Willy Loman. However, the play incorporates some minor characters that assist in bringing out the theme clearly and portraying the American dream from a positive perspective. The play highlights the different ways in which different people will view the American dream and how effective or ineffective some of them will be in achieving the Americ an dream. The American Dream is dependent on the person pursuing it and the character of the person as well. The American dream is success and the ability to live a comfortable life without any financial constraints. The American dream constitutes of happiness and fulfillment in the life of the characters and their families. Miller tends to show that a wrong interpretation of the American dream may result to failure and frustration in the life of an individual. The American dream tends to mold the behavior of some of the characters in the play. Some of the characters portray good moral behavior towards achieving the American while some care less about ethics as far as achieving the American dream is concerned. Willy is the main protagonist in the play and has been used by Miller to show how the American dream negatively affects his lifestyle. Willy is a salesman and hungry for success to the extent of being jealous of people who have succeeded in achieving the American dream. He is jealous of his brother’s quick success. This implies that he cannot go for any help in wanting to know how to achieve the dream or being successful. His pride is what makes him fall and fail to accomplish his desires towards providing enough support to his family. Willy is as well jealous of his friend Bernard due to his success in achieving his dream. Bernard is popular and successful. At some point Willy says, â€Å"The man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want. Therefore, this fact makes Willy have the misleading perception that popularity and fame can are aspects that can drive a person towards achieving the American dream. This is shown when Willy wants his children to be as famous as Bernard’s children. This is a misleading notion that results to the failure of Willy’s strong desire to achieve the American dream. Contrary to the negative results of trying to pursue the American dream of success and happiness in life, Miller has shown the positive impacts of the American Dream to some of the characters in the play. Ben has been used by Miller to show how successful some people may be when achieving the American dream. Ben is Willy’s brother who is hardworking and determined. However, Willy is not happy about Ben’s success because Miller tells us that he is really jealous of his brother’s success. He is so jealous that he cannot heed any advice from his brother. From Willy’s behavior, Miller tries to show that the American dream is not a competition amongst individuals but it should be a competition against oneself. This implies that if Willy would have heeded to some of the advice given by Ben, he would have moved a step further in achieving the American dream. Bernard, Willy’s friend, is another example of how many people want to become successful in life. Bernard is popular and successful contrary to Willy. Bernard is quite determined and ready to help anyone who is need including Willy. â€Å"A small man can be just as exhausted as a great man.† (Benard Act 1). By employing Bernard as one of the characters in the play, Miller tries to show that the American dream should not be locked to oneself but should be shared amongst the entire population. Bernard is kind hearted and successful in ensuring that his family is comfortable. Bernard experiences limited financial constraints and his family is therefore happy. However, his success is not brought about by his popularity and fame as Willy thinks. His hard work is what makes him achieve the good things in life. From Bernard’s point of view, success can only be experienced from being persistent and highly aggressive in pursuing ones own goals. Bernard believes in offerin g a helping hand to anyone who is in need. However, his kind hearted helping hand is turned down by his friend Willy. Willy is jealous of Bernard’s success just as the way as he is jealous of his brother Ben. Singleman is another character in the play used by Miller in depicting the American dream in a positive way. Single is also popular and successful in business and also the community. Singleman is wise and ready to face the different challenges posed by life. He views challenges as steps that motivate a person towards achieving their dream. Success is Singleman’s major focus. This is the case in the whole of the America where everyone wants to be financially independent in pursuing different goals in life. Miller shows that success will not always be appreciated by everyone. This is clearly highlighted by the fact that Willy’s reminisce of Singleman’s death. Willy’s thoughts are accompanied by many mourners at Singleman’s funeral. Miller reveals that not everyone will be supportive in road to success. This gives the implication that Willy is a bad influence to his family and the society at large. Miller reveals that not everyone is meant to be successful in life and that luck may as well act as a way through which people achieve their dreams. This is shown by the fast rate at which Willy’s brother, Ben, becomes successful. Ben is a determined and hardworking person in achieving his goals. However, this fact does not fully support his quick rise towards achieving the American dream. Miller therefore reveals that some people will just get lucky in achieving their dream goals. This may be the reason why Willy is so jealous of his brother’s quick success. Miller shows that Willy’s view of the American Dream is very different to that of his friends in the society. This strongly supports the notion that different people will have different perceptions of the American dream. A wrong perception about the American will automatically result to failure and frustration. Willy is frustrated because his salary is very little and cannot fully support all the needs of his family. Contrary, Ben, Bernard and Singleman are successful and determined people in the play. If Willy would have heeded to one of their advice, may be he would have began his way to achieving the American dream of success. Miller therefore tends to show that everyone needs help at some point in life and the person should decline the help as long as it in good faith. Conclusion Every individual will have a different way of describing dream goals. Dreams are at some point viewed from a national perspective and the general populations of a country might share common goals in life. This has been properly highlighted by Miller in â€Å"Death of a salesman†. The play has a sad ending as the main protagonist does not live to see his American dream. This is evidenced when Willy’s son says, â€Å"Im gonna show you and everybody else that Willy Loman did not die in vain. He had a good dream. Its the only dream you can have to come out number-one man. He fought it out here, and this is where Im gonna win it for him. (Death of a Salesman, Act 2). However, most of the people with whom Willy is associated are successful in achieving their dreams. To achieve dreams in life, a person will have to view it from a positive perspective. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that â€Å"the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education†. When we think of schooling and education and what it really entails many might assume it serves the same function. In this essay we shall elaborate on the views of the functionalist and conflict paradigm of the role schooling and education, we will also look at the differences and similarities of the two theories providing evidence from different sources. Therefore, it could be impossible to view the role of education and schooling in a functionalist perspective. By contrast, Marxist and functionalist exemplify the roles of schooling and education varyingly. However, these two theories do agree that schools and society should be closely linked. Other concerns of Marxist which they disagree on is the close link between the schools and the demands of the rich individuals rather than the needs of the whole society. Functionalist basically sees educational institutions almost as adequate tools for sorting and selecting talented people for producing intellective skills. On the other hand, Marxist views schools as serving the interest of the high class individuals, backing up existing unevenness, as well as producing a frame of mind that foster acceptance of this existing conditions (Hurn, 1993: 69). Some people think that the drinking age should be lowered to 18. I personally don’t think it’s a good idea. Alcohol is a depressant meaning it slows down brain function. Most people don’t know that alcohol is a drug just like methamptamine and marijuana the only difference is that alcohol is legal in the U. S. for anyone 21 and over. Each year, approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking. This includes 1,900 car accidents, 1,600 homicides, 300 suicides, and hundreds of other deaths due to accidents like falls, burns and drownings. Alcohol causes more than 4% of deaths worldwide. There are more deaths caused by alcohol then all of the other illegal drugs and substances combined. Outsourcing is either harmful or beneficial for American economic Essay

Outsourcing is either harmful or beneficial for American economic - Essay Example This activity assists companies in lowering their costs as the cost of production in US is quite high due to high cost of labor. With the economy development, more and more U.S companies would rather to choose outsourcing than the local service. To a certain extent, it is acceptable for America and American companies to be dependant on the labor of other countries. The activity of outsourcing of jobs conducted by US companies is not only beneficial for them, it is even beneficial for other nations because in these nations, there are low amount of jobs and the amount of salary they are paid is even low. Because its lower cost can help the U.S companies develop and can save the money for local customers. Also with more working positions are moving out of the country, there will create higher income jobs for local citizens. The several benefits associated with outsourcing of jobs include higher level of creativity in production, low cost of production, higher quality of service and incr eased number of jobs and wages for the workers of other nations. Outsourcing is a term used to refer to the act of obtaining goods and services from suppliers that are not located in nations that produce those goods and services. Murray Weidenbaum, a very famous economist and ex-chairman of President Regan’s Council of Economic Advisers, once announced that companies located throughout the US outsource their economic activities for several reasons. He feels that reasons for outsourcing include entrance into international markets, decrease the production cost, and to gain a competitive advantage while they compete in the global markets. The main benefit that a business within U.S obtains from outsourcing is the low cost of production as the product is produced at much lower cost in other nations as compared to the same product produced in the U.S. The U.S is importing raw materials from foreign nations, and the transfer of raw materials to the destination where they are used t o produce goods may increase the cost of production. If U.S manufacturers open their production line in areas where they obtain their resources, they no longer have to worry about the cost of raw materials transportation, and can direct deliver their products from the industry. It will become more profitable for businesses. For example, if in U.S organizations are importing raw materials from China and producing goods in the U.S. They not only have to pay the cost of the shipment fee but also need to afford the high wages in the state. If the company decide to move the manufactory into China, the wages over there are much cheaper than the U.S and set China as a delivery center, and the company doesn’t need to pay for the raw material transportation fee and only needs to pay the shipment fee of production sale which the company always have to pay either they located the manufactory in China or U.S. With this decision making, the company can save lots of money from the labor an d transportation fee, it can definitely help company to use the rest of money to expand the market and develop the company. Also once the company less their cost on producing the product, they would also cut down the price attract the consumers to make more sales revenue. Therefore the US companies are not the only one benefiting from outsourcing, even the consumer side is positively

Good Night and Dance in America Essay Example for Free

Good Night and Dance in America Essay Death is inevitable and comes in different cases, and when it’s nearly there people has different ways on how they deal with it but the most affected of all are the people around them. Just like in Lorrie Moore’s â€Å"Dance in America† and Dylan Thomas’ â€Å"Don’t Go Gentle into that Good Night† both features dying people and how they live knowing anytime soon, they could die. Life is a gift from God; everyone should learn to value his life, maximizing what he can do while he is still alive, especially for his family, friends and other people around him, because nobody knows when will be the final hour. The poem â€Å"Don’t Go Gentle into that Good Night† is strongly emotional and by reading each line, you can feel the author’s anger or bitterness about death. Thomas used the term â€Å"good night† to represent death with respect to the Christian belief that death is a peaceful rest of the body as it enters the next life. Though it can be interpreted in different ways, as a personal note, the poem summarizes his thoughts about the inevitability of death and the way people deal with it. He states that people know that death is for certain, that people already accept the fact that everyone will come to their end according to the will of God but, at the end of the day, they fear leaving the world and regrets start to bother them. He mentioned in his poem about wise men that despite their wisdom cannot truly tell why death is inevitable and just accept the fact that they are dying; of the good men who did good deeds but still end up with death; and those men who lived with serious illnesses who should have enjoyed life more than just wait for their final hour. Then when their time comes, it would be too late to regret things and time wasted. Thomas also addressed there his father as he witness how his father suffered from blindness and illness, crying in pain but seems like just waiting for his end. He doesn’t like the idea that one should readily accept his death but instead, one should fight for his life and struggle against death, whether you are a wise, good, wild, or grave man. Gently accepting death, for him is narrowness, that God’s greater plan is being given up: there’s more to life. For him, death is not the end of life on Earth and the beginning of another life. Life could be more valuable and may be lived longer if people would never give up easily and fight death. (Thomas, Dylan) In Moore’s work, she also tackled the different issue in life including death. A seven year old boy named Eugene was born with a disease that affects the lungs called cystic fibrosis. He got the disease from his father. He also had some relatives who died with it. In the story, Eugene’s case had become more serious that he generated too much liquid in his lungs. But despite the graveness of the health condition, the researchers, doctors, and his family lose no hope that somehow he can survive. But like any parents, Eugene’s experience brings them sadness and grief knowing that their child is suffering from a very serious health problem. They don’t want to lose him not just because he is their only child but also because they believe he is such a good boy for God to let him die at a very young age. Eugene, himself, is also very open-minded about his condition. He understands everything and the disease didn’t pave the way to make him enjoy his childhood. He and his parents are making sure he is enjoying every moment of his life, making things seem normal. (Moore, Lorrie) The death of Simone’s first husband is also mentioned. That he killed himself after she dumped him. The author indirectly tries to say that life is unfair and ironic. There are people who longs and would do anything for a healthy life but then there are people who were granted with a normal life and healthy body would just give it all up and commit suicide. (Moore, Lorrie) In comparison, the two authors both discussed about death and the way people deal with it. Some readily accept their death and some even waste the opportunity to live, while some still fight as long as they are alive. They question its inevitability. They show that death comes unexpectedly. Life is unfair. Thomas argues about struggling in life, same as Moore as she presented the life of Eugene who is fighting against cystic fibrosis. Life is worth living and therefore it should be greatly valued by people. Their writings both presented a clear visualization of the scenarios. The works are both full of emotions and imagery. Thomas’ work is very conversational, that it is directly telling people to value life and struggle against death, especially in the part where he is talking to his father: â€Å"And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. † (Thomas, Dylan) He is saying â€Å"curse me for being still alive saying all these things, and bless me as well. You should have not readily accepted your death just like that. Life is worth living. † While in Moore’s, she leave the emotion and the message for the readers to interpret to themselves what she is trying to say by just presenting circumstances and issues. â€Å"Don’t Go Gentle into that Good Night† has an angry, sorrowful, and persuasive tone which strikes through the heart, while â€Å"Dance in America† has mixed emotions such as fun, sorrow, and anticipation which is more entertaining. The works of these two great authors agrees with the same thing, that life is worth living. Everyone is entitled to take care and value his own life for you’ll never know when it will end. Life can be very unfair and ironic. Live and enjoy your life as if everyday would be the last. Value it knowing there are some people who would have wanted to be in your shoes for having a normal and long life. For those who have serious illness or is determined to anytime soon, one should not lose hope for there are more good things to come and instead of getting bored in life or get yourself stuck on your room crying and just wait for the final hour, spend your time exploring the world with your family, friends and loved ones. There are just too many reasons for someone to stay alive and embrace life whole-heartedly. Do what you want before it is too late. Take care and value life just like what Dylan Thomas said in his poem, â€Å"Rage against the dying of the light! † You can make your light shine brighter. References: Moore, Lorrie. Birds of America. Aboriginal Customary Law VS European Law Essay -- essays research pape

Aboriginal customary law and European law have been at odds since the first years of the European invasion, but only recently has the clash come into the open. Stuart MacMillan of the Aboriginal Resource and Development Services in the Northern Territory says that remote Aboriginal communities there and in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland see no reason why they should submit to "whitefella law". The governments of the Northern Territory and Western Australia are investigating how indigenous law can be incorporated into state law. Chris Sidoti of the Human Rights Council of Australia says: "Some people would say that human rights runs opposite to Aboriginal law, others that it provides a universal standard to which other legal traditions must adapt. Customary law can't remain immutable. The problem for those trying to bring the two systems into line is that human rights law derives from a western legal tradition which frequently contradicts Aboriginal law. Colin McDonald, a Darwin barrister and expert in customary law, says that on such issues Australia's legal system may simply have to bite the bullet and go against the norms of international human rights. Aboriginal women have often claimed that the law has been slanted to support the rights of indigenous men over women. Lowitja O'Donoghue, who formerly chaired the government's Aboriginal affairs body ATSIC, believes that Australian law should be more aggressive in such cases. Some aspects of Aboriginal law are falling out of practice. Chris Sidoti believes that whatever balance is struck will be as distinct from traditional European law as it is from traditional Aboriginal law. "For traditional people, being put in jail is more inhuman than spearing, and any unified law would have to recognise that. Aboriginal Customary Law The High Court did, however, conclude in that case (a conclusion confirmed in WA v Commonwealth, Wororra Peoples v WA and Teddy Biljabu and others v WA, High Court, March 16 1995) that some Aboriginal land law (that which attracted the status of 'native title') survived the colonisation process. What is far less certain is the fate of Aboriginal customary laws that were not concerned with title to land. Did traditional laws on subjects such as family relationships, title to goods, community justice mechanisms, inheritance and criminal law survive c... ...e necessary, and those laws which were to be applied could not be made applicable to all of the Aboriginal peoples but only to some. It would not be inconsistent with the principle of equality before the law that, where members of the Aboriginal race have special needs, those should be recognised by special rules laid down by the law. Further, the law is flexible enough to allow the courts to consider the special situation of an Aboriginal party where that is relevant. As the courts have recognised, the sentencing of Aboriginal offenders presents particular difficulties. Judges, in an attempt to do justice in discharging the difficult role of sentencing tribal and semi-tribal Aboriginal persons, have gone further. Clearly the ordinary criminal law is capable of facing these difficulties. It is neither necessary, nor desirable, to apply to the Aboriginal peoples the rules of their customary law rather than the general law. The attempt to uphold Aboriginal customary law is one aspect of the notion that the Aboriginal peoples will benefit if they continue to be treated as a class separate from the rest of the communi ty, which must necessarily be a dependent and disadvantaged class.
